Spotify x Bixby
Time: December 2017 - August 2018
Scope: UX
Role: Product Design Lead
Bixby is the built-in assistant for Samsung devices. It learns what you like to do and shows content from your favorite apps and services in a single feed. The Spotify integration with Bixby gives users easy access to control Spotify within the Bixby app.
The second iteration of the feature deepens the integration between Spotify and Bixby. Bixby will automatically connect to Spotify when users ask for music recommendations or to play a song.
We also explored new ways drive engagement through music discovery. A new “Top Charts” card shows trending music to owners of new Samsung devices, without Spotify needing to be installed on the phone.
Research
Previously, I worked with Spotify’s user research team to explore the most interesting content for iOS widgets. The widgets displayed trending songs, concerts near you, or a Spotify feed with updates from the artists and playlists you follow on Spotify.
Using card sorting exercises we found that users were interested in trending songs.
Top Charts
Based on this research, I designed a Top Charts card to drive Spotify installs on new Samsung devices.
Rather than display a generic “Global Top Charts” playlist, we can personalize the content by showing trending songs in the user’s country. This is possible by pulling the country code from the device. For example, a US phone will show Spotify’s “United States Top 50” playlist. Showing relevant content is important as Spotify expands to global markets.
