Spotify x Facebook Messenger
Time: December 2017 - February 2018
Scope: UX
Role: Product Designer
The Spotify extension for Facebook Messenger launched in April 2017. It allowed users to search, share songs, and make group playlists with friends. After a successful initial launch period, the feature’s usage was in decline. To resurrect MAUS, the team looked at ways to develop low-effort sharing opportunities within Messenger.
Spotify Extension
The Spotify extension lets friends discover and share music directly in their chats. The integration recommends playlists based on mood or activity. Users can also easily share their “Now Playing” or “Recently Played” tracks and search for songs, albums, or playlists across Spotify’s catalog.
Recipients can listen to a 30-second song clip directly in Messenger, or tap a link to listen to the full song on Spotify.
Messenger M Bot
Using the Messenger M bot, the team iterated on the extension to detect artist mentions and suggest songs for the user to share. For example, if you mention Drake in a conversation, M will ask if you’d to share one of his songs. Reducing the friction of manually searching for songs increased usage by 5x.
Say It With Music
I worked with an engineer to expand the opportunities for passive sharing. We explored use cases where music was not the focus but where it could enrich the message, such as birthday wishes and holiday greetings. These passive sharing opportunities led to a 50% increase in monthly active users and a 3x increase in daily registrations.
